Sunday (9/6/26) Discussion: More storms anticipated today, showers could linger into the night

Good Sunday morning to everyone, we hope you are having a good start to the Labor Day weekend. 

Yesterday, we had a round of thunderstorms during the mid-afternoon thanks to upper level features dropping in from the northwest. We expect a similar setup for today as additional upper level features slide through. 

The Storm Prediction Center does have our region in the marginal and slight risk for severe storms for today. Damaging winds and some hail are possible with the strongest storms. Timing looks to be roughly after 2 pm through the early evening hours for severe weather. 

Please make sure to have a method of receiving weather warnings if you plan on being outdoors this afternoon.

Rain chances to linger overnight?

Once the severe weather threat exits, the threat of rain may persist for some into the overnight hours as we get a surge of southeast winds just off the surface moving toward the Blue Ridge Escarpment.

That’s usually a good recipe for showers to fester around into the late night in our western counties such as Rutherford, McDowell, Burke and Caldwell. Sure enough the guidance is picking up on those lingering showers after midnight,

This upslope component will likely assist in keeping temperatures on the cooler side for Labor Day itself.
