Good evening, everyone. I wanted to bring you a quick update on a new tropical system developing in the Caribbean, currently identified as “97L.” This is an open low-pressure system that we’re keeping a close eye on, particularly for potential impacts on the Carolinas. While we’ve recently endured significant effects from Hurricane Helene, this system is not shaping up to be anything like that. However, it could bring rain to our area, which, given our recent conditions, we’ll want to monitor closely.
At this point, there’s a lot still up in the air. For instance, we’re watching a trough of low pressure moving down from Canada. The speed and timing of this trough will help determine the tropical system’s path. If the trough slows down, it could steer the system westward. If it speeds up, it may pull the system to the northeast, limiting potential impacts to eastern Carolina. A middle scenario could bring some rain to our region, though nothing like the rainfall levels from Helene.
Right now, it’s possible we may see some rain, with amounts potentially reaching two inches or more. Due to our recent storms, even moderate rainfall could create landslide risks along weakened areas on the eastern and southern Blue Ridge slopes. We’ll continue to track developments, but for now, there’s no need to worry.
