Debby to become a hurricane next 24 hours, flooding to become main threat

Good Sunday morning to everyone,

We continue to monitor Tropical Storm Debby as it moves toward the Florida Big Bend. On the water vapor image you can see Debby with quite an extensive moisture envelope on its eastern half, while some dry air in the mid levels are located west of the storm and across parts of the Southeast US. The expectation is for Debby to become a hurricane over the next 24 hours and that will be dependent on how quickly an inner core develops later today.

While we cannot rule out some rapid intensification resulting in wind impacts for the Florida Panhandle, the major calling card ultimately is going to be the flooding rains across the Southeast US as the steering currents fall apart resulting in a stall or drifting motion in the storm starting Monday and lasting for several days. The trough which brought thunderstorm activity to western North Carolina over the weekend is moving out.

The amount of rainfall that is going to occur across Southern Georgia and Lower South Carolina will be catastrophic for some.


There will be some indirect impacts on our weather because of Debby but as the week progresses the impacts could become more direct as moisture may get pulled further inland. You can see on the moisture loop that Debby has a fairly large moisture envelope.

Sunday-Tuesday: Northeast surface winds and lower moisture content will help limit precipitation chances, especially closer to the moutains. High clouds will also help limit temperartures.

Wednesday-Friday: As as the surface remains of Debby end up across Georgia/South Carolina, northeast winds will shift to east and possibly southeast allowing an upslope component to reach the Blue Ridge meaning better chances for shower activity.
