Foothills Action Network to add Polk County to Coverage Area, Effective Friday December 1

Foothills Action Network would like to announce that effective Friday December 1st, 2023 we will be adding Polk County to our forecast coverage area. That will increase the coverage area to a total of nine counties across Western North Carolina. Our decision to add Polk County came as a result of demand for hyperlocal weather information and analysis by residents of the county.

You may have noticed during the month of November that our forecast team began to include 7-Day forecast information specific to Polk and neighboring Rutherford County. Next Friday we will begin full coverage of the county, which includes the communities’ of Mill Spring, Columbus, Green Creek, Tryon and Saluda. Full coverage will not only include the daily forecast but also severe and winter weather alerts for the area.

Foothills Action Network is known for its weather coverage on social media. On December 1, all prudent weather content for Polk County will be integrated into our Rutherford County Facebook page, giving you a one-stop option to storm coverage across the Southwestern Foothills and the Green River Gorge.

Columbus (Elevation, 1,148 ft) is the county seat and has a population of 1,060 people according to the 2020 Census data.

Polk County Courthouse, Columbus NC

The vast majority of Polk County has an elevation that ranges between 850 – 1200 feet in elevation giving the communities a climate pattern similar to neighboring Rutherford County. The town of Tryon is the highest populated center in the county with a population of over 1,500 residents. Tryon is also the home of the International Equestrian Center which hosts events year round…

Polk County is also very similar to other counties in the coverage area due to the proximity to the Eastern and Southern Escarpments of the Blue Ridge. The Green River Gorge cuts through northwest sections of the county with a jump in elevation to over 2,500 in some localized areas. There is one community (Saluda) that lies in the higher elevations of the county giving those residents some different weather conditions compared to the lower elevations.

The County Population as of the 2020 census is 20,724 people.

Our forecast team is excited to expand into Polk County and we look forward to serving your area with hyperlocal weather content that you can’t find anywhere else on the web,
