Foothills Action Network and Mi Paloma Mexican Restaurant is proud to bring you the Winter Outlook for 2023-24.
Meteorological winter begins this Friday, December 1st and here are some of the key headlines that will influence the winter season as a whole.

Primary Jet Pattern
The image below is how we expect the main jet stream pattern to evolve over the bulk of winter. The Pacific is going to play a huge part with the El Nino that has taken over. We will see periods of zonal flow from the west coast and eastward across the US. That will keep the air fairly mild. Also notice a southern jet running from Mexico across to Florida, that could be an active storm track across the deep south. This setup will allow fast-moving system to spread clouds and at times, moisture into the Southeast US.

Secondary Jet Pattern
When the northern jet decides to buckle across Western North America it is more capable of dropping colder airmasses into the Eastern US. Our secondary jet pattern shows that. Meanwhile the southern jet will remain in place and could lead to some phasing at points during the winter. This secondary pattern is what snow lovers will want to see in order for winter storms to impact the Southeast US.

Summary…
- El Nino, while slow to react during the autumn, will gradually increase through the upcoming winter leading to precipitation at or just above normal.
- More clouds, faster moving systems could lead to more clouds at times and therefor temperatures close to normal.
- Pacific-North American Ridge (+PNA) will at times promote pattern for winter weather.
