Light Freezing Rain and Sleet Tonight & Sunday Morning

Good Saturday Morning. Clouds will increase today but it’s a nice morning out there, albeit chilly.

Low pressure will move from the Gulf Coast, up the spine of the Appalachian’s Sunday. Moisture will advance north, ahead of the system and overspread the mountains predawn Sunday Morning. Temperatures across the ridgetops and some valleys will be at, or just below freezing. Projected thermal profiles of the atmosphere drop below freezing at about 4500-6000ft. That indicates the possibility of some sleet mixing in across the mountains. Below 3000ft though across the foothills, we are expecting rain with a few sleet pellets mixed in at times.

The mountain ridgetops could see ice accrete to .10 to .15 of an inch. We think temperatures should rise above freezing before ice accretion reaches .25 inch. A trace to one-half inch of sleet is possible as well above 3000ft.

The foothills and lower elevations should just anticipate rain and Sunday will be damp and cold. It will be a good day to sit by the fire and read a good book or watch your favorite movie.
