Lead Forecaster Daniel Crawley
Good Thursday evening to everyone, the first winter storm of the season is going to impact the Foothills and Western Piedmont of Western North Carolina on Sunday. Our confidence in this forecast has grown enough over the past 24 hours to produce our “first call” map for winter precipitation amounts on Sunday…if that’s all you are interested in seeing, scroll down to the bottom of the blog post. Meanwhile keep reading as we detail the synoptic setup.
The key player in all of the winter weather is an upper shortwave that has entered the West Coast of the US. It will ultimately phase with energy diving down from Canada to form a strong storm system…

The following slides is some additional information about the storm system, an updated look at the Winter Weather Index…and most importantly a first call of snow/sleet/ice accumulations expected through Sunday Night.
A big thanks to Jackson Hewitt Tax Services of Morganton for sponsoring our winter storm coverage…
