Sunday 8/23/26 Discussion: Much needed break from humidity

The main story for today and tomorrow is decreasing humidity and a near-zero thunderstorm threat. The stifling humidity and storms has had a big presence on the local weather most of the summer.

A weak front/air-mass change is moving through the region, allowing drier air to filter southward. Around the Foothills—from Marion, Morganton and Hickory westward toward the higher terrain—look for plenty of sunshine with some passing clouds.

Forecast breakdown…

• Foothills: generally upper 70s to mid-80s
• Western Piedmont: mid/upper 80s, locally warmer toward Charlotte
• Morning: comfortably cooler, with temperatures falling into the upper 50s and 60s in many Foothill locations
• Afternoon: mostly sunny and considerably less humid
• Thunderstorms: very limited; most locations should remain dry
• Winds: generally light, with a northerly component developing

Tonight may actually be the most pleasant period of the next 48 hours.

With clearing skies, light winds and the drier air mass overhead, temperatures should fall efficiently after sunset. The coolest readings will occur in sheltered valleys and rural areas of the Foothills.

Expect many locations to drop into the 60’s with some of the normally colder locations along the Blue Ridge potentially reaching the 58-60 degree range. That will be a dramatic improvement over the muggy nights we’ve experienced recently.

Monday continues the relatively benign weather pattern.

The Foothills should again see a mixture of sunshine and scattered clouds, while the Western Piedmont becomes a little warmer. The atmosphere should remain substantially drier than it has been during the recent unsettled period.

The important point is that Monday does not currently look like a typical late-August storm day. The combination of limited moisture and weak forcing should suppress convection again.

• Rapid warming after sunrise
• Afternoon highs generally low-to-mid 80s in the Foothills
• Mid-to-upper 80s across the Western Piedmont
• Mostly dry conditions
