AREAS AFFECTED: Western North Carolina, including portions of the southern and central mountains, foothills, and adjacent western Piedmont.
CONCERN: Thunderstorm activity is expected to rapidly increase in both coverage and intensity over the next several hours, with some storms capable of becoming severe within the highlighted area.
METEOROLOGICAL DISCUSSION
The convective environment across western North Carolina continues to become increasingly favorable for strong to locally severe thunderstorms this afternoon.
Strong surface heating is well underway, with temperatures across much of the region in the 80s to around 90 degrees. This heating, combined with abundant low-level moisture, is contributing to continued destabilization of the boundary layer. As remaining convective inhibition continues to erode, the environment should become increasingly supportive of vigorous thunderstorm development.
Recent radar trends already show scattered convection developing across portions of the mountains and foothills. This activity likely represents the beginning stages of a broader increase in convection expected through the afternoon.
We expect thunderstorm coverage to increase rapidly through the mid and late afternoon as additional cells develop along differential-heating boundaries, terrain circulations, outflow boundaries, and other mesoscale zones of convergence.
Initially, storms should remain relatively discrete and pulse-like. However, as coverage increases, interactions between individual thunderstorms and their associated outflow boundaries should become increasingly common. Storm mergers and intersecting boundaries may locally enhance updrafts and increase the potential for stronger downdrafts.
Given the hot and increasingly unstable boundary layer, stronger thunderstorm cores will be capable of substantial precipitation loading followed by rapid downdraft acceleration. This will create the potential for localized damaging straight-line winds.
SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL
The primary severe-weather concern through the afternoon and early evening will be DAMAGING THUNDERSTORM WINDS.
As thunderstorm coverage increases, convection may gradually organize into clusters or short multicell segments. Stronger cold pools developing beneath these storms could produce localized damaging wind gusts, especially with collapsing thunderstorm cores or where storms interact with pre-existing outflow boundaries.
Wind gusts of 50 to 60+ mph will be possible with the strongest storms, with isolated higher gusts possible where storm-scale processes become favorably aligned.
Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and torrential rainfall will accompany the stronger thunderstorms. Localized flash flooding may also become a concern where storms move slowly or repeatedly develop over the same locations.
Small hail will also be possible within the strongest updrafts, although damaging straight-line winds appear to be the primary severe-weather threat.
TIMING
1 PM–3 PM: Scattered thunderstorms continue developing across the mountains and foothills. A few storms may already produce strong wind gusts, frequent lightning, and torrential rainfall.
3 PM–7 PM: PRIMARY PERIOD OF CONCERN. Thunderstorm activity is expected to rapidly increase in coverage and intensity. Scattered strong thunderstorms and isolated severe thunderstorms will become increasingly possible across the highlighted area.
7 PM–10 PM: Thunderstorms may continue into the evening, although the overall severe-weather threat should gradually diminish as instability decreases following sunset.
BOTTOM LINE
Environmental conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for a rapid expansion of thunderstorm activity across western North Carolina over the next several hours.
We are particularly watching the potential for initially scattered convection to become considerably more numerous during peak afternoon heating. With a hot, moist, and unstable boundary layer in place, the strongest thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging straight-line winds, frequent lightning, torrential rainfall, and localized small hail.
The highlighted area should be considered the primary corridor for increasing strong-to-severe thunderstorm potential through the late afternoon and early evening.
Thunderstorms will be capable of intensifying quickly after development, and conditions may deteriorate rapidly as storms approach.
