As we head through the middle of the week across the Western North Carolina Foothills, the weather pattern remains active but low impact overall. While we are not looking at a major winter event, there are still a few things to watch, especially with cold mornings and a weak system midweek.
Tuesday: Mostly Cloudy and “Warmer” — But Still Cold
Tuesday will feel warmer compared to recent days, but temperatures remain below normal for early February, which is reflected in our First Look Forecast graphic.
Highs today will range:
- Lower to mid-40s for most foothill locations
- A few upper-40s possible farther south
Skies will be mostly cloudy, and while most of the day stays dry, a weak cold front approaches late in the day, setting the stage for a few light showers toward evening and overnight.
Despite the daytime warming, morning temperatures started very cold, and that matters.
Black Ice Concerns Early Tuesday
Snow continues to melt during the daytime hours, and any leftover moisture can refreeze overnight and early in the morning. As highlighted in our recent impact messaging:
- Patchy black ice remains possible early Tuesday
- Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are the primary concern
- Conditions improve quickly after sunrise
This is a low-coverage but high-impact hazard, especially for early commuters.
Tuesday Night into Wednesday: Rain First, Then a Low-End Snow Chance
As shown in our Forecast Headlines graphic, precipitation begins as liquid rain Tuesday night as the weak cold front moves through.
By Wednesday:
- Light rain showers remain possible early
- Temperatures cool through the day
Wednesday afternoon and evening is when we’ll need to watch temperatures more closely. As colder air filters in behind the front, a brief transition to snow is possible, mainly late Wednesday or Wednesday night.
Key points:
- Any snow would be light
- Accumulations, if they occur, would be a trace to very minor
- Many locations may see no snow at all
This lines up with the 10-Day Forecast graphic, which shows:
- Wednesday highs near the mid-40s
- Low precipitation totals
- A “trace” snow signal at best
Confidence on exact coverage remains low to moderate.
Late Week: Drying Out and Slowly Warming
Once this midweek system exits, the pattern quiets down nicely.
- Thursday and Friday look dry
- Sunshine increases
- Highs rebound into the upper-40s to near 50 by Friday
- Cold mornings continue, but not as harsh as what we have been accustomed to over the last couple of weeks.
The weekend looks favorable with dry weather and seasonable temperatures, as shown in the extended portion of the 10-Day graphic.
Bottom Line for the Foothills
✔ Mostly cloudy but slightly milder Tuesday
✔ Black ice risk early mornings
✔ Rain Tuesday night
✔ Low-end snow chance Wednesday, mainly late
✔ Dry, calmer weather heading into the weekend
