We are keeping a close eye on the potential for winter weather next weekend across Western North Carolina. While confidence is still low, the overall weather pattern is one that can support snow or ice, and it’s worth paying attention as we move through the week.
Let’s walk through this step by step.
First: A Cold Front Midweek
A strong Arctic cold front will move through the area Wednesday night into Thursday.
In the mountains, this front could bring some mixed precipitation. In the lower elevations, it currently looks like mainly rain. Behind the front, much colder air moves in.
This front will be important later, because it sets up the pattern for the weekend.
What Happens After the Front?
By Friday, the cold front moves south of our area and stalls. At the same time:
Small disturbances in the atmosphere (called shortwaves) move along this stalled front. These don’t do much on their own, but they help keep the boundary active.
By Saturday, a large area of Arctic high pressure settles over the Great Lakes. This high pressure acts like a pump, sending cold air southward into the Carolinas along the East Coast.
In simple terms:
Cold air gets locked in near the ground.
Why Next Weekend Is Worth Watching
Late Saturday into Sunday, a pair of weather disturbances move out of the ArkLaTex region (Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas).
As these systems move northeast:
They can strengthen temperature contrasts along the stalled front. This allows moisture to ride up and over the cold air already in place.
That setup is a classic way winter storms develop in the Carolinas.
If everything lines up correctly, this could lead to a widespread winter weather event across Western North Carolina.
Snow vs Ice: A Big Question
There are many questions still on the table, which is normal at this range.
Right now:
The best chance for snow would be along and just north of the stalled front. If warmer air sneaks in above the cold air (a “warm nose aloft”), precipitation could fall as freezing rain or sleet instead of snow.
Ice is often more dangerous than snow.
It can cause:
Power outages Tree damage Widespread travel problems
In some situations, ice storms can be more disruptive than severe storms.
Bottom Line (For Now)
Confidence is low, but attention is high. The overall pattern is very favorable for winter weather in the Carolinas. Over the next several days, this setup will either trend colder and stronger or weaken.
We’ll be watching this closely from Saturday through Sunday next weekend.
Why the Pattern Is So Favorable
This is one of the better large-scale winter patterns we’ve seen in several years, thanks to key global signals lining up:
Negative NAO (-NAO): Helps block warm air and slows weather systems Neutral to rising PNA: Supports colder air in the eastern U.S. MJO entering Phase 8: Historically favors cold and active winter weather in the East
These signals don’t guarantee snow or ice — but they raise the odds.
Stay Tuned
This is not a forecast yet, but it is a situation worth watching. Updates will continue as confidence improves and details become clearer later this week.
