(1/19/25, 12:30 pm): Arctic Cold Wave moves in tonight, Flurries possible Tuesday Night

Good Sunday afternoon,

We continue to monitor the next cold blast that moves in tonight bringing well below normal temperatures through a large chunk of this week.

The leading edge of the arctic blast is now approaching the Southern Appalachians. Temperatures late this afternoon will begin to fall east of the mountains while snow showers will continue to increase across the North Carolina mountains.

Here are our latest thoughts on this cold wave as confidence is high…

Monday will feature temperatures that will be around 20 degrees below the averages for Jan 20. With the cold and wind combined, it will feel more like the single digits/low teen’s in the morning with lower/mid 20’s in the afternoon. Across the mountains, wind chill values will go below zero in the morning hours and remain in the single digits through the afternoon before the wind begins to calm down.


While the Western Carolinas deal with brutally cold weather, a wave of low pressure will develop on the arctic front which will be located just off-shore by Tuesday. The wave will throw some moisture into cold air over the Eastern Carolinas bringing snow to the Coastal Carolinas Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Accumulations will fall generally along and east of I-95. As the upper level features moves through, snow flurries could briefly develop close to the NC-SC border Tuesday night.


Summary…

Completions need to be finalized today for extended cold that may impact pipes, heating sources and automobiles. Also, take care of pets and individuals who are generally prone to adverse weather conditions.

Due to the extent of cold air coming in, the Winter Storm Index remains at Level 1…
