Good Thursday afternoon,

After dealing with a lot of unsettled weather over the past week, we have a nice change of pace coming as high pressure will slide in delivering a perfect late-September weekend for western North Carolina.

It really starts today as skies are clearing and we are warming up from the cool, wet weather of earlier in the week.

A large sprawling area of high pressure aloft is moving from the Four Corners Region of the country toward the Central and Southeast US for this weekend. With the jet stream being displaced so far to the north, the airmass across all of the country is Pacific in origin which is mild.

Looking at the surface features, a weak area of high pressure will be stretched out across the Carolinas, light winds over the area with a lot of sunshine should allow things to warm up pretty well. Temperatures will go above normal reaching the low-to-mid 80’s.

On Sunday, the axis of high pressure will be centered more along the coastal plain of the Carolinas and that will allow southwest surface winds to promote additional warming. Mid 80’s are a good bet for the region on Sunday.

The Bottom Line…

A beautiful weekend is on the way as temperatures will go above normal through at least Sunday. There are suggestions that a backdoor front may cool us back down by Monday or Tuesday.

Just for reference the average high for this time of the year is around 79-80 degrees, so we are looking at temperatures that could reach 5-8 degrees above the norm.

It will be a good time to get some outdoor chores done or maybe a ride up on the Blue Ridge Parkway to look at some of the early fall colors above 4,000 ft.
