Humidity temporarily departs for Thursday but returns for the weekend

Good Wednesday evening, hope everyone is doing well…

Typical summer-like pattern continues across the Southeast US, today turned out to be really nice across western North Carolina as some less humid air moved in replacing the oppressive humidity that has been in place for several days.

Looking at the synoptics, a trough in the middle part of the country combined with the leftovers of former Beryl has been the catalyst of pushing in the less humid air eastward.


Thursday is going to feature a seasonally warm day across western North Carolina but with the low humidity in place, it will negate the heat index. Infact, you may see some reverse heat index values as they will be lower than the actual air temperature.

Meanwhile along the Coastal Carolinas the tropical moisture will not scour out but instead a new upper low at 5,000 – 10,000 ft altitude will begin to form off the coast and will help push a surge of moisture straight off the Atlantic. For those on vacation on the North Carolina Coast and Grand Strand of South Carolina, rain chances will ramp up especially on Friday.

The coastal upper low will help push some easterly fetch across the state and the western edge of the deep tropical moisture will try to make a run toward western North Carolina on Friday. With easterly fetch we could have an increase of clouds and surface moisture, however it may not yield much in the way of rainfall.

Model dewpoint temperatures (Thursday PM – Saturday AM)

The Foothills and Western Piedmont will get one good day (Thursday) of lower humidity before muggy conditions return for the upcoming weekend.

FWIW, here’s a look at rainfall through Saturday, not much for WNC but those Downeast could get a soaker at times…
