“Hotter than the 4th of July”: Dangerous heat possible through holiday weekend

Happy Birthday America,

As is quite typical for early July, we are in store for some hot weather across the Carolinas for the holiday and the upcoming weekend ahead.

High pressure aloft will settle overhead meanwhile at the surface, southwest winds will begin to push in really warm temperatures.

Mid to a few upper 90’s are possible for actual temperatures beginning today and lasting through Saturday afternoon with dewpoints increasing to near 70 on July 4 to the mid 70’s by Saturday, July 6.

The combination of high heat and high humidity will lead to head index values getting into the triple digits east of the mountains. The only possible deterrent to extremely high heat index values will be with cooling thunderstorms that may fire up during the afternoons, especially along the Blue Ridge.

Be careful if spending any extended time outdoors the next few days. A lot of folks will be outside because of the holidays, don’t ruin the enjoyment by letting mother nature getting the best of you.

After looking at the guidance, we have generated a graphic showing where some of the higher heat index values could occur between now and Saturday…

The expectation is for heat advisories to be issued by the National Weather Service for some in the coverage area later this week.
