(1/4/2024 6:30 pm) Winter Precipitation to move in early Saturday

Good Thursday evening to everyone. Winter storm coverage is sponsored by Mi Paloma Mexican Restaurant in Morganton.

We continue to monitor a winter weather event that is expected to impact western North Carolina late Friday night and into the morning hours of Saturday. The following graphics have been updated as of 6:15 pm on Thursday, Jan. 4

There have been no major changes in regards to the synoptics or timing of the event which is expected to start after midnight on Friday night and last into the morning hours of Saturday. Our locations right along the Blue Ridge Escarpment will last the longest with those along US 74 in Cleveland County and up into Lincoln County will change over to a cold rain the quickest.

In terms of amount of frozen precip, we have increased amounts due to increased confidence. Would not be shocked to see localized amounts approaching 1/4 inch ice accretion along the escarpment from Old Fort (McDowell Co.) northeast to Patterson in Caldwell County.

Another area worth watching will be from Saluda and northeast through the Green River Gorge.

  1. Icing of medal and elevated objects including tree tops and power lines
  2. Isolated Power Outages
