Below Normal Temps This Weekend. Meteorological Spring Brings Warmer Temps.

Good Saturday Morning. It is Saturday February 26th, 2022. Today is the 57th day of the year. There are 308 days remaining. The sun rises this morning at 7:00am and sets at 6:19pm with a total daylight of 11 hours and 18 minutes. That is 2 minutes and 12 seconds more daylight than yesterday! Yayyy!!! We continue to add two plus minutes of daylight from here through April 26th. Then the additional daylight slows a bit but we keep gaining daylight all the way through June 20th, the Summer Equinox. For climatological purposes Spring begins Tuesday March 1st, 2022.

Weather wise this morning a short wave is moving northeast along a stalled frontal boundary to our northwest. A thin ribbon on rain has developed on the southern half of that shortwave and the narrow band of rain stretches from Chattanooga TN to Taylorsville. Over our area, most of this is evaporating before reaching the ground (virga) but there are some light sprinkles and showers, even a few sleet pellets out there. As the front starts to sag south and east today this band of moisture will slowly move east as well. So expect cloudy skies with isolated to widely scattered showers today. Though it is cold this morning temps are safely above freezing. Expect a mainly cloudy day as well even after that band of precipitation slides east. Cooler temperatures today as well with highs in the low to mid 50’s.

As the front moves into the area tonight showers will again become more widespread. This rain will continue through the morning hours of Sunday. By Sunday Afternoon the front looks like it will move on southeast out of our area. Downsloping winds and drier air move in Sunday Afternoon and should help to scour cloud cover and will return the sunshine to our area.

Following Sunday’s rain we will dry out and warm up. More and more 70’s are appearing in the 7 day outlook from models. This is welcome news to many folks out there. I have to be honest. As a snow lover and a person that embraces winter weather, I don’t see snow in the cards for the reminder of the cool season. It is Spring in The Carolina’s though. Things can rapidly evolve and change. For now lets just soak up the sunshine and enjoy getting outdoors and enjoying life.

What type of flowers do you plant this time of year? When do you usually start your outdoor landscaping in the Spring?

Here is a look at model projected high and low temperatures over the next 10 days.
