Heads up this afternoon for those in the western Carolinas and parts of southwest Virginia — we’re monitoring the potential for some strong to severe thunderstorms to develop. While a full-blown severe weather watch isn’t guaranteed just yet, there is about a 40% chance that one could be issued later today.
Here’s what you need to know:
What’s Happening Right Now?
Light showers have already started to form across the western Carolinas. These early showers are likely just the beginning, as we expect a few of them to grow into stronger thunderstorms through the afternoon hours. Right now, the setup for severe weather is still developing, and there’s some uncertainty about how widespread or intense the storms will become.
Who Could Be Affected?
Western North Carolina (including the Foothills and Mountains) Upstate South Carolina Southwest Virginia
These areas are in the zone where stronger storms could pop up as we head deeper into the afternoon.

What’s the Threat?
While this is not expected to be a major outbreak, we could still see:
Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph – strong enough to knock down small limbs or move unsecured objects. Small hail – generally under 1 inch in diameter. Heavy rain and frequent lightning.
Not everyone will see these storms, but the ones that do develop could pack a punch in isolated spots.
Why the Uncertainty?
There’s a bit of a battle going on in the atmosphere today. Cloud cover over the mountains is limiting sunshine, which keeps the lower atmosphere cooler and more stable. But as you move east into the Piedmont and toward the Coastal Plain, there’s more sunshine and warmth — which creates the fuel storms need to strengthen.
Right now, storms are firing in the cooler areas, so it might take some time before they intensify. However, as they drift east into the warmer Piedmont region, they could tap into better conditions for stronger storms.
What Should You Do?
Stay weather-aware this afternoon. Download a reliable weather app or follow our updates for any changes. If storms develop in your area, head indoors and avoid being outside during lightning or strong winds.
This is a classic case of “hit-or-miss” storm activity. We’ll be keeping a close watch on radar trends this afternoon and will update you immediately if a severe thunderstorm watch or warning is issued.
Stay safe, and keep an eye on the sky!
