Foothills & Mountains Weather Blog: April 7–13, 2025
Good Monday afternoon! After a wet and stormy night, our weather across the foothills and mountains of Western North Carolina is transitioning, but we’re not quite finished with the rain just yet. Here’s a detailed look at the week ahead, from today through Sunday.
Monday Afternoon – Monday Night: Another Round of Rain and Thunder
The main severe weather threat from overnight has diminished, and the flash flooding risk is quickly shifting eastward away from our region this morning. While severe storms are no longer anticipated today, we still can’t rule out a couple of thunderstorms. The cold front responsible for last night’s heavy rain is stalling just east of our area, and another wave of low pressure moving north along that boundary will bring renewed showers and possibly a rumble of thunder later this afternoon into tonight. Expect moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall, especially across areas from Marion to Hickory, Shelby, and Gastonia. Additional rainfall amounts will generally remain under an inch, but localized higher totals could occur in isolated spots.
Tuesday & Wednesday: Drier, Cooler Air Returns
By Tuesday morning, rain will finally be moving out completely, leaving cooler, drier air in its wake. Expect sunny skies, cooler temperatures, and refreshing breezes. Highs on Tuesday and Wednesday will struggle to reach much beyond the mid-50s in the foothills (Newton, Lincolnton, Taylorsville) and upper 40s to low 50s in the mountains (Jonas Ridge, Blowing Rock, Little Switzerland).
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning will be chilly, with patchy frost likely. Gardeners across the area should protect tender vegetation, as temperatures will dip into the low to mid-30s by early Wednesday.
Thursday – Saturday: Gradually Warming, Mainly Dry
A gradual warming trend kicks off by Thursday, continuing through the weekend. Afternoon highs will climb back into the 60s across most foothill towns, from Rutherfordton to Forest City, Shelby, and Gastonia. Mountain areas will remain cooler, generally seeing highs in the upper 50s.
Aside from a slight chance for a brief, isolated shower Friday afternoon—mainly confined to higher elevations—weather conditions will stay mostly dry and comfortable for outdoor activities and weekend plans.
Sunday: Pleasant and Mild
We close the weekend on a pleasant note, with partly sunny skies and mild temperatures in the mid to upper 60s for most lower elevations and around 60 degrees in mountain towns. Sunday looks ideal for outdoor events, yard work, or simply enjoying the return of comfortable spring weather.
Bottom Line
• Another round of rain and a few thunderstorms today, but severe weather risk has passed.
• Chilly and breezy conditions Tuesday and Wednesday; frost likely Wednesday morning.
• Increasingly mild, pleasant weather from Thursday through the weekend, perfect for outdoor plans.
