As we move into the late winter and early spring months, fire danger in Western North Carolina begins to rise. The dry conditions, gusty winds, and warming temperatures contribute to an increased risk of wildfire. While these high fire danger days can be a cause for concern, they also provide ideal conditions for an essential forest management practice—prescribed burning.

Prescribed burning, also known as controlled burning, is a carefully planned and executed fire set under specific weather conditions to improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk. Land managers and fire professionals use these burns to remove excess vegetation, reduce hazardous fuels, and restore the natural fire cycle to fire-adapted ecosystems.
Hurricane Helene and Increased Fuel Loads
Since Hurricane Helene, a significant amount of trees have failed across the region due to the system’s strong winds coinciding with saturated soils. This has left behind extensive deadfall, creating additional fuel loads in the forest. As these downed trees dry and cure, they increase the potential for high-intensity wildfires. Without mitigation efforts such as prescribed burning, these conditions could lead to extreme fire behavior similar to what has been seen in places like Los Angeles, where unmanaged fuel loads contributed to devastating wildfires.
“Given the massive amounts of new fuel on the ground as a result of Helene, proactive management and planning is going to more critical over the next five or more years,” said Nick Larson, District Ranger on Grandfather Ranger District. Larson went on to say, “We’ll need more investment in home hardening, controlled burning, fuels reduction, reestablish fire lines and frankly we need to be prepared for wildfires behavior and wildfire damage to be much more severe.”

Why Prescribed Burns Matter
Forests in Western North Carolina have evolved alongside fire, relying on periodic burns to maintain ecological balance. Without regular, low-intensity fires, dead leaves, pine needles, and fallen branches accumulate, creating a thick fuel layer. This buildup can lead to dangerous, high-intensity wildfires that threaten homes, communities, and natural resources. By conducting prescribed burns under controlled conditions, land managers can reduce the amount of flammable material, decreasing the risk of large, destructive wildfires.

Prescribed burns also promote biodiversity by improving habitat for native plant and animal species. Fire clears out invasive undergrowth, allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor and encouraging the growth of native grasses, wildflowers, and fire-adapted trees such as longleaf and shortleaf pines. Many species, including certain birds and pollinators, rely on the open forest structure created by periodic burns.
Protecting the Wildland-Urban Interface
With more people living near forested areas, protecting the wildland-urban interface (WUI) has become increasingly important. Prescribed burns create firebreaks—areas where vegetation has been reduced—helping to slow or stop the spread of unplanned wildfires. By lowering fuel loads near homes and infrastructure, controlled burns provide an added layer of protection for communities, reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfire damage.

Challenges Facing Prescribed Burning Efforts
The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) plays a critical role in conducting prescribed burns on public lands, but recent layoffs have made these efforts more challenging. With fewer personnel available to carry out and oversee controlled burns, the overall capacity for fuel reduction may be impacted. While land managers and fire professionals will continue working to mitigate wildfire risk, reduced staffing could limit the number of burns that can be safely conducted on USFS lands.
Choosing the Right Time for a Burn
High fire danger days often coincide with favorable conditions for prescribed burns. These days typically have lower humidity and moderate winds, allowing fire managers to maintain control while achieving the desired fire effects. Fire crews carefully monitor conditions, including temperature, wind speed, and moisture levels, to ensure that the burn remains within the planned area and meets ecological objectives.

As we approach prime prescribed burn season, land managers across Western North Carolina will take advantage of suitable conditions to conduct these beneficial burns. While smoke may be visible on certain days, these fires are a proactive measure to maintain forest health and protect communities from the growing threat of wildfires.
Prescribed fire is not just a tool—it is a necessity for maintaining the balance of our forests. By embracing controlled burns, we can ensure that our woodlands remain resilient, our wildlife thrives, and our communities stay safe.
