The weekend is here and for this next-to-last week of April we are going to be in a transient weather pattern.

There are a lot of features at play. We first have a shortwave moving across Southern California and into the Four Corners Region of the US, to the north there is a broad trough of low pressure and behind that is some relatively cool air for this time of the year. It will take a little while for that to all get here but first, the southern feature will quickly scoot across the Southeast pushing moisture across during the next 48 hours…
Saturday will be just the slightest of shower chances as the low level winds veer around to the northwest. Highs for Saturday will be several degrees cooler than the 80’s we have experienced this week. By Sunday, a weak area of low pressure will force moisture across the region. While rainfall amounts don’t look excessive, most everyone along and south of I-40 will see some wet weather on Sunday.
The cold front that sparked a few thunderstorms on Friday will move to our southeast through the day on Saturday, that will eventually shift surface winds to northeast Saturday Night and Sunday leaving a cold, overrunning type setup on Sunday.

This perfect setup of moisture and CAD (Cold Air Damming) is going to lead to a drastic drop in temperatures during the day Sunday. We may be looking at pre-daybreak high temps in the low 50’s with a gradual decrease into the 40’s as the heaviest moisture moves in. That will be a huge shock to the system considering the 80’s we have seen this week, be prepared!

It wouldn’t be out of the question that if the atmosphere can saturate for a long enough time on Sunday that we may see reports of snow above 5,000 ft in western North Carolina, areas like Mt. Mitchell, Mt. Pisgah, Beech Mountain.
