Here Comes The Heat?: First Chance at 90-degree Temperatures Next Week

Lead Forecaster Daniel Crawley

Good Friday morning to everyone, this entire week has been pretty nice from a weather aspect. Pleasant mornings, mild days and relatively low humidity. The spoils of spring weather however are coming to an end, reality sets in and it appears that the first legit heatwave for the Southeast could be on the way in the next seven days.

But first… A retrograding upper low has settled into the southeast and will hang around for a good part of this weekend. Humidity will increase today and we will see a few showers from time to time. That will continue through the upcoming weekend.

By the time we get to next week the weakness aloft across the southeast will fill in and be replaced by Westerly flow as a sprawling ridge will take over across the Southern tier of the United States.

500 mb heights (Wed 8 am)

This kind of upper level pattern while allow temperatures to reach the mid to upper 80s across the lower elevations of Western North Carolina by the middle part of the upcoming week.

Then once we get to the end of the current seven day forecast a full blown eastern US ridge will develop allowing heights to rise even more. This sets the stage for the first 90° plus temperatures of 2022 for the North Carolina Foothills and especially the Piedmont

Along with the increasing temperatures will also be an increase in humidity. Today’s upper low is making conditions more humid. As it leaves early next week we will see a temporary lowering of humidity only for it to return in a big way by next weekend.

Precipitable Water Values (Through May 21st)

For those who are clamoring for summer looks like you will get your wish as we head into next week
